Congo (Organic, Fair Trade)

A light roast coffee for people who want sweetness, brightness, and a softer cup.

This Congolese coffee from Ampersand Coffee Roasters stood out because it brings together milk chocolate, caramel, and a hint of lemon-lime.

If most of the coffees you drink are medium or dark roasts, this is a good way to try something from the light roast tier.

Why we chose it

We chose this coffee because it represents the classic combination of a light-roast African coffee.

Most of the coffees we currently feature lean medium, so this Congolese selection offers a different kind of cup: softer, brighter, and more lifted, with milk chocolate, caramel, and a hint of ripe lemon-lime.

Coffee production in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is also a stabilizing force in a historically volatile region. Supporting the local coffee industry can affect positive change in creating financial freedoms and stable communities. There's more to this cup than just the coffee.

Is this coffee a good fit

Good fit if: you want to try a lighter roast without jumping into something too sharp or intense.

Probably not for you if: you strongly prefer dark, heavy, roasty coffees.

About the roaster

Ampersand Coffee is a Boulder, Colorado roaster focused on organic and fair trade coffee, environmental sustainability, and women’s empowerment.

Their coffees reflect a clear sourcing philosophy centered on supporting better farming practices, stronger producer communities, and more responsible environmental standards.

We chose to feature Ampersand because that approach fits what Lightyear is looking for - coffees with quality, traceability, and purpose behind them.

How to get the best cup

This coffee is sold whole bean only.

For best results, grind just before brewing. Start with a medium grind for drip coffee, medium-fine for pour-over, and coarse for French press. If the coffee tastes sharp or sour, try grinding a little finer. If it tastes bitter or heavy, try grinding a little coarser.

Small grind adjustments can make a big difference.

About the Origin

Coffees from the Democratic Republic of Congo are often bright and fruit-forward, with lively acidity. They tend to lean toward vibrant profiles.

Congo is one of the smallest exporters of coffee globally, so their coffees are rare finds. For comparison, Congo's coffee export volume amounts to 1% of Colombia's.
