Why we chose it

We typically lean toward single origins, but this blend is a special addition to our lineup.

The Ring of Fire blend from Dean's Beans brings together coffees from East Timor, Sumatra, and Papua New Guinea - origins that can show earthy, herbal, and heavy-bodied qualities, especially in a darker roast. Here, that translates into a rich cup with depth.

Dean's Beans is also aligned with Lightyear's values, focusing on ethical sourcing, farmer relationships, and using coffee as a tool for social, economic, and environmental impact.

Is this coffee a good fit

Good fit if: you prefer chocolate, earthy, or roasty notes over bright fruit.

Probably not for you if: you want bright fruit, florals, or experimental processing.

About the roaster

How to get the best cup

This coffee is sold whole bean only.

For best results, grind just before brewing. Start with a medium grind for drip coffee, medium-fine for pour-over, and coarse for French press. If the coffee tastes sharp or sour, try grinding a little finer. If it tastes bitter or heavy, try grinding a little coarser.

Small grind adjustments can make a big difference.

About the Origin

Coffees from East Timor, Sumatra, and Papua New Guinea can vary in their flavor profiles but often possess earthy and herbal characteristics. As opposed to a brighter flavor profile brought out by lighter roasts, the herbal and spice notes are best accentuated by darker roasts.

Indonesia is a major coffee exporter, with Sumatra driving much of that production. Papua New Guinea exports about 25% as much coffee as Indonesia, with East Timor in turn exporting a fraction of Papua New Guinea's production.
